Cores primárias

Nas artes, definimos como cores primárias aquelas que não podem ser obtidas mediante mistura de nenhuma outra cor. Essas cores são o amarelo, o azul e o vermelho. É por meio da mistura dessas três cores que obtemos as outras.

Essa é a definição que aprendemos nas aulas de Artes na escola, que é baseada na teoria dos pigmentos, ou seja, formação de cores pela pigmentação. Por exemplo, a mistura da tinta amarela com uma tinta vermelha gera a cor laranja.

Classificação das cores

Tradicionalmente, as cores são classificadas em primárias, secundárias e terciárias. Veja como cada cor é formada na teoria dos pigmentos.

As cores podem ser classificadas como primárias, secundárias e terciárias.

Cores primárias

Cores primárias ou puras são aquelas que não podem ser obtidas por meio de outras misturas. São elas:

Amarelo
Azul
Vermelho

Cores secundárias

Cores secundárias são geradas por meio da mistura de duas cores primárias.

Amarelo + vermelho = laranja

Vermelho + azul = roxo ou violeta

Azul + amarelo = verde

Cores terciárias

As cores terciárias são geradas pela mistura de uma cor primária com uma cor secundária.

Vermelho + roxo = vermelho-arroxeado (similar ao vinho)

Vermelho + laranja = vermelho-alaranjado ou laranja-escuro

Amarelo + verde = amarelo-esverdeado ou verde-claro

Amarelo + laranja = amarelo-alaranjado (similar ao bege)

Azul + roxo = azul-arroxeado

Azul + verde = azul-esverdeado (similar ao verde-água)

Cores frias, quentes e neutras

As cores também podem ser denominadas pela sua “temperatura”, ou seja, de acordo com a transmissão de sensações gerada pela tonalidade. Nesse caso, elas são chamadas de neutras, quentes e frias. Confira como é a classificação:

Cores neutras: são as cores que possuem pouca reflexão da luz.

Ex.: tons de cinza e de marrom.

Cores quentes: são as cores que podem transmitir uma sensação de calor.

Ex.: vermelho, laranja e amarelo.

Cores frias: são as cores que transmitem sensação de frio.

Ex.: azul, verde e violeta.

Síntese aditiva e subtrativa

A teoria dos pigmentos não é a única utilizada para a definição das cores primárias, pois as cores também podem ser formadas a partir da luz. Na teoria da cor-luz ou cor-energia, as cores primárias acabam mudando para o vermelho, verde e azul. Com base nesse princípio, surge o sistema de cores-luz, formado pela síntese aditiva e subtrativa.

Síntese aditiva

União das cores resulta em uma luz de cor branca.

Síntese aditiva ou tríade aditiva são as cores primárias de luz: o vermelho, verde e azul. A união dessas três cores forma a luz branca. Na informática, essas três cores são mais conhecidas como sistema RGB, que deriva das cores no inglês red (vermelho), green (verde) e blue (azul) e, quando combinadas, podem produzir a sensação visual de outras cores.

A principal função do sistema RGB está em reproduzir as cores nos dispositivos eletrônicos. As televisões, computadores, projetores, câmeras digitais, entre outros, transmitem as imagens utilizando esse sistema.

Síntese subtrativa

Na síntese subtrativa ou tríade subtrativa, as cores primárias são o ciano, o magenta e o amarelo. Elas recebem esse nome em consequência de suas misturas resultarem no preto, ou seja, ausência de luz.

Quando essas cores são misturadas em intensidades diferentes, conseguem alcançar uma alta quantidade de tons. Esse sistema é conhecido como CMYK, que corresponde às cores cian (ciano), magenta (rosa), yellow (amarelo) e black (preto).

União das cores resulta no tom preto.

As cores do sistema CMYK vêm da parte da luz que não é absorvida. Nesse caso, a principal função do CMYK é reproduzir as cores em materiais impressos, sendo utilizado nas impressoras, fotocopiadoras etc.

Sistemas envolvem as cores aditivas e subtrativas.

*Não existe uma teoria concreta sobre o uso do K para representar a cor preta (black). Alguns pesquisadores afirmam que o 'K' é usado como referência a palavra 'Key', que significa 'Chave' no inglês, e o preto é tido como cor-chave na indústria gráfica. A outra teoria afirma que a letra 'K' foi escolhida porque o 'B' é usado pelo azul (blue) do sistema RGB.

Cores primárias para a Física

Para a Física, as cores primárias já tiveram diferentes interpretações. A primeira delas, teorizada por Isaac Newton, explicava que as cores primárias seriam as sete cores mais distinguíveis do arco-íris. A partir da combinação dessas cores, Newton produziu novos tons e, dessa forma, julgou-as como cores primárias.

Thomas Young, por sua vez, entendia a luz de forma diferente: Young interpretava como uma onda e provou que a combinação de três frequências específicas de ondas, correspondentes às cores azul, verde e vermelho, seria capaz de produzir todas as demais cores do espectro visível.

Alguns anos depois, a teoria de Young foi aprimorada pelo alemão Hermann van Helmholtz: para ele, as cores eram produzidas a partir da combinação de apenas três frequências de luz, uma vez que o olho humano seria muito mais sensível a elas. Sua conclusão foi que o olho humano deveria apresentar somente três tipos de receptores de cor (células especializadas na captação de luz).

A teoria de Helmholtz ficou conhecida como teoria tricromática e foi posteriormente confirmada pelos experimentos feitos por James Clerk Maxwell, que envolviam a percepção das cores em discos que rotacionavam em alta velocidade. Graças a esses estudos, atualmente a Física entende que a existência das cores primárias está relacionada à limitação sensorial do olho humano.
